HAMBURG — Attica/Batavia finished as one of two teams to record a 7-1 mark at this past weekend’s St. Francis High School VinLouie’s Duals. Casper Stewart, Wyatt Kauffman and Colin Bannister were honored as All-Tournament team selections, as the Blue Devils matched Hamburg/Eden for the top finish of the 10 teams involved in the meet.
Batavia/Attica defeated Newfane, 39-36, in the opening round and followed that up with a 60-18 ousting of St. Mary’s of Lancaster, then a 73-0 throttling of East Aurora/Holland in round three. In round four, Batavia/Attica defeated Orchard Park, 42-35, then dropped host St. Francis, 45-28, in round five. After a break in round six, Batavia/Attica moved past Salamanca 72-6, then defeated Fredonia, 63-12, in the following round. In round nine, Batavia/Attica suffered its lone defeat, 39-26 at the hands of Hamburg.
FIVE GRAPPLERS WIN INDIVIDUAL TITLES AT B-B INVITE
An outsider, Chatauqua Lake, made the trip to Section V territory over the weekend and took first place at the Byron-Bergen Wrestling Invitational. Chautauqua Lake took the team victory by outscoring runner-up Brighton, 216-124.5.
Five GLOW region grapplers finished atop the podium, including Byron-Bergen’s Malachi Smith, who recorded a first-place finish at 189 pounds which helped him earn Most Outstanding Wrestler honors. Dansville’s Wyatt Satrori (102 pounds), Perry’s Holden Kelly (132 pounds), Medina’s Sawyer Kingsbury (215 pounds)and Lyndonville’s Sam Doolan also earned individual titles.
“Wyatt dominated all day,” said Dansville head coach Justin Walker. “He set the tone riggt out of the gate, beating a very tough opponent 18-3 with plenty of time left on the clock. A great addition to the team not only through his knowledge and skill but he has fit right in as one of the boys. He always makes everyone smile. He is sure to be a wrestler to be watched for many years.”
Pioneer (114) came in third place in the team race, while Victor (87) finished in fourth place. Three GLOW region teams rounded out the top seven, with Letchworth (71) finishing fifth, Lyndonville (69) coming in sixth place and Dansville (57.5) finishing seventh. The host Bees (56) finished eighth as a team.
