SPENCERPORT — For the first time in program history, Batavia/Attica wrestling took down Spencerport, 48-30, on the road on Wednesday night. Luke Gutman’s pin of Spencerport’s Ryan Cullen helped key the Blue Devils’ victory over the Rangers, who entered last night’s action as the 11th-ranked team in NYS Wrestling Division I, per New York Wrestling News.
“It was a great win for our program,” said Batavia/Attica co-head coach Rick Stewart. “Being able to compete with a perennial legacy program shows the direction our team is going.“
Gutman’s pin came at the end of a battle that lasted 3:28 and ended in the B/A ninth-grader sticking Spencerport’s senior 126-pounder.
“That was definitely a match they were favored in, it being a freshman going up against a senior,” said Stewart. “We were hoping he could maybe get the decision, but the pin was unexpected. It put us on the right track. That was a good little win to get us back into the match because they got two pins right before that. It switched the moemtnum back in our favor.“
Also picking up wins by pin for B/A were Preston Bannister, Wyatt Bryman, Colin Bannister, Tymothey Murrell and Wyatt Kauffman. Batavia/Attica, which was a recipient of an honorable mention in the latest NY Wrestling News rankings, is now 9-1. Spencerport is 1-1.
